Steinway NY Model B (6' 10.5 ") Art Deco Style
Custom Sketch Case #1032A/B - Serial Number 286000
Offering for sale in the Washington, DC area, a custom-built Steinway Model B Sketch Case #1032A/B Modern Lacquer in Art Deco style. This magnificent instrument was designed by renowned architect and artist J. Robert F. Swanson and built in 1936 by Steinway & Sons in New York City. It was made expressly for a prominent Detroit, Michigan family.
The instrument was owned by an accomplished pianist and became the center of her vibrant musical activities in Detroit and later in upstate New York. It was played by such luminaries as Leonard Bernstein and Menahem Pressler. The piano has remained in the family since new in 1936 and is now offered as both an exemplary musical instrument and a unique Art Deco artifact. The case is in keeping with the Art Deco tradition, simple lines with a Harewood veneer and finish (a form of English maple, but is called "sycamore" in England; also named plane, or planetree). This Model B was completely restored in 2005 by Clark Music (an authorized Steinway & Sons dealer) in Syracuse, New York.
2005 restoration included:
- Complete new NY Steinway action
(wippens, shanks, flanges, NY improved hammers
- New pinblock
- New pins
- New strings
- Refinish plate in original metallic color & texture
- Refinish Soundboard & Bridges
- Refinish case to original color with lacquer finish
- Restore ivory keys
- Full regulation
The Model B (56” wide and 83” long) is among the most popular of performance level Steinway pianos. Large enough to offer all the bass response needed for discerning musicians and professional venues, yet small enough to fit in a well-sized living room or music room, the Steinway B is the standard by which the versatility and all-round musical merits of most other pianos are judged. It is universally recognized as the “number one recording studio instrument” of choice for all types of music. This piano is in excellent, performance-ready condition.
